Notebook LM (NBLM)

At its core, Notebook LM (NBLM)) is a “source-grounded” AI research assistant, meaning it doesn’t just guess answers from the internet; it builds its “brain” specifically from the documents you provide. By anchoring its logic to your files—whether they are PDFs, Docs, or YouTube transcripts—it drastically reduces the risk of the AI “hallucinations”.

To get started, you simply head to the Notebook LM interface and create a new notebook for a specific project. From there, you upload your sources; as of 2026, you can drag in up to 50 diverse files in the free version, including complex spreadsheets and even raw audio recordings. Once your sources are indexed, NBLM instantly generates a high-level summary, suggests key topics, and offers a list of questions to help you start digging into the material without having to read every page first.

Expanding the Toolkit: File Production and 2026 Capabilities

NotebookLM is no longer just a text-in, text-out tool; it is a full-fledged content factory. The current 2026 capabilities allow users to transform raw research into a variety of sophisticated formats through the Studio features. You can generate Audio Overviews, high-fidelity Video Overviews with narrated visuals, and interactive Mind Maps that visually cluster themes for easier brainstorming. For those needing formal outputs, the tool now produces structured Briefing Documents, Slide Decks (exportable as PDFs), and even full Blog Posts that maintain the tone of your original sources.

To do this, simply select the resources of interest, and generate one of the numerous outputs that NBLM can generate. You can select specific sources to focus the AI’s attention, by checking or unchecking boxes in the sidebar. By doing so, you dictate exactly which information the AI should consider. This allows you to toggle between a broad overview of an entire semester’s worth of material or a focused deep dive into a single complex chapter.

Classroom Transformation: Recordings to Study Notes

The integration of in-class recordings has helped the Academic Department of SGU in providing additional study materials. In-class audio recordings are now uploaded to Notebook LM to generate Study Notes that summarize the entire session. For students, this acts as a cross-referencing document to check whether they’ve noted down the key aspects of the class. Students can also create their own Study Guides, Flashcards, and Quizzes that emphasize the lecturer’s specific focus areas, or even personalize their own learning. Lecturers, on the other hand, use this feature to review their own delivery, quickly identify if they missed a key curriculum point, and generate comprehensive “guided notes” or FAQs to distribute to the class.
